Job title: Software Developer
Drawn to the Island for his love of the TT and opportunities offered in the IT sector, Zakk went on to study at UCM before securing his first job in software development. Never two days the same, Zakk enjoys the dynamic work involved in software development at CoinCorner.
CoinCorner is a cryptocurrency exchange based in the Isle of Man. Founded in 2014, CoinCorner currently operates in 47 countries worldwide and was one of the first exchanges to fall under any form of cryptocurrency legislation.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University College Isle of Man in 2016. I’m 23 years old and have been working at CoinCorner since 2017.
Although I had no work experience in crypto before starting at CoinCorner, I had worked at a software development company on the Isle of Man after graduating.
Life on the Isle of Man
What attracted you to remain on the Island after school for further education or work?
I’d definitely have to say the TT! I love the TT and feel that it’s always a great experience for Island residents and tourists.
What are the career opportunities in IT?
In the IT industry, there are a lot of opportunities in nearly every type of business. This is especially true on the Isle of Man as there has been a shortage of IT professionals and many companies looking to improve their use of technology.
What is your favourite thing about living on the Island?
See above for my comments on the TT - it’s the best time of year.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in software development?
It happened by chance to be honest. I knew that IT was a fast-growing industry and a friend suggested I do a computer science degree. The rest is history!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The organised chaos! Our industry is extremely fast-paced and things change day-to-day. This means our team has to be flexible and ready to adapt to any market updates.
Career progression to date...
- Graduate Junior Software Developer - Software development
- Software Developer - Crypto
Do you have any role models that have helped inspire you?
I have no stereotypical role models, but I do admire our co-founders, Danny Scott, Phil Collins and Charlie Woolnough. They continue to be inspiring in showing our team how to run a successful business.
What are your aspirations?
To help make CoinCorner one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world!
What advice would you offer to students looking to return to the Island, or who are considering remaining on the Island instead of going abroad to study?
My advice would be to just wing it and see what happens!
