Georgia Vernon

Company: PDMS

Job title: Graphic Designer

Georgia is a budding creative individual who landed on her feet securing herself a role with PDMS's design team straight out of school. After undertaking an internship with the software development company alongside her school work, Georgia was offered a position to follow a career in graphic design. From print design to building websites for local businesses, Georgia's flare for her passion is visible in her work. Georgia loves life on the Island, exploring it with her puppy Arlo and making the most of the sea right on our doorstep.

Background

Education

I studied at Ballakermeen High School in the Isle of Man. I studied Art, ICT, Geography and Business Studies.

Work experience

I undertook a few different work experience placements before I found out what I really enjoyed. During my GCSE’s I did work experience in a Beauty Salon for a week. I really enjoyed it however, it didn’t interest me to do it as a career. When I was sitting my A-Levels I did two very different types of work experience. In my first year, I went to a primary school. I really enjoyed working with the children and liked the idea of doing it as a career, however, I did not want to go to University so I knew it wasn’t an option for me. During my second year, I decided to contact PDMS to see if they had any work experience I could do with graphics once a week for 6 months. They accepted my request and I went on to be being offered a job as a full-time Trainee Graphic Designer.

When did you graduate higher education?

I finished my A-Levels in June 2017. And I am currently 19 years old.

Life on the Isle of Man

What attracted you to remain on the Island after school for work?

I decided to stay on the Island as I knew Graphic Design was what I wanted to do. Instead of going away to university and getting myself into debt training to study graphic design, I could do it here for free whilst earning money and building on my current work experience.

Having the sea within a 10 minutes drive and water sports that you can participate in over here, like kayaking and paddle boarding, is hard to give up too!

What is your favourite thing about living on the Island?

Having the beach right on your doorstep and being so close to everything. I love kayaking!

What are the career opportunities in Design?

There is a variety of career opportunities open to me in my job role, which can range from progressing to Graphic Design Manager, Front-end Developer or Project Manager, to specialising with animation and print design.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in Graphic Design?

I decided to pursue a career in graphic design because there is so much to do, and graphics is everywhere! Visual design is integrated into our everyday lives and I love seeing how people interact with good (and bad!) design.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy designing websites, building them and taking through to going live. I like to see how happy the clients are when you produce a piece of work they really like.

What is your career progression to date?

After my first year with PDMS, I was promoted from Trainee Designer - my job title is now Designer and I continue to take on new responsibilities as my skills and confidence grow.

What are your aspirations?

In the long run, I would like to become a graphic design manager or take a path toward project management.

Finally...

What advice would you offer to students looking to return to the Island, or who are considering remaining on the Island instead of going abroad to study?

I would say if there is an opportunity to study what you want to do on the Island, do so. It will save you money in the long run!
